There is no such thing as a routine case at NWS! Every year we see hundreds of lame dogs and of course every case is different. But what happens once you leave your pet in our care? Let’s go on a doggy walk through the hospital!
Bert was referred to NWS after going lame chasing a Frisbee. His vet suspected a ruptured cruciate ligament – common in both dogs and footballers. Bert’s owners were met at NWS by Steve Bright a specialist surgeon and Bert was scheduled for knee surgery within a week – no long waiting lists here!
Bert was admitted by one of the nurses and settled into a kennel. Most orthopaedic cases have their operation the same day and spend that night in the hospital so we can make sure they are comfortable after surgery and recover fully before going home.
Our air-conditioned kennels are equipped with comfortable mattresses to ensure the best in rest and recuperation. And what about the menu?
The kennels staff were able to serve up Bert’s usual food, however our extensive range of food caters for every palate – perfect for your pet to make them feel right at home.
As Bert’s surgery time approached he received a visit from our anaesthetist for a health check to make sure everything was tip-top before surgery. Bert was given a pain killer and sedative before his anaesthetic as part of our pain management protocol. A general anaesthetic meant Bert knew nothing of his surgery and woke up a couple of hours later back in his comfortable kennel, with his bad knee now much better!
After major surgery we believe every pet deserves close attention which is why our wards are staffed by a team of nurses and animal care assistants who look after your pet’s every need. Bert was visited frequently by a nurse to ensure he was comfortable after his operation and that he was given pain killers as necessary. NWS has vets on site 24:7 which allows us to give the very best care to your pet.
Bert’s surgeon Steve Bright assessed his progress the morning after surgery and Bert was signed off ready to go home. After a bath and a groom, he was off. Of course there’s nothing like your own bed! We’ll see Bert again in 6 weeks to check how well his knee is healing. No chasing the postman in the meantime Bert!
