Winston - Acupuncture For Arthritis
When I first met Winston early last year he was 7 years old and suffering from elbow dysplasia. As a Labrador, one of his favourite past times was retrieving – something which his elbows prevented him from doing. Despite treatment with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Winston was not 100% comfortable and his owner was very concerned about his pain. After careful discussion and much consideration, Winston was prescribed the pain relieving drug gabapentin in addition to his existing pain killers on the basis that two types of drug which act at different levels of the pain pathway provide a better overall effect than a single drug. With this combination Winston was much more comfortable. Winston then started a course of acupuncture here at NWS, with a treatment session once a week. His comfort levels improved dramatically and his owner was overjoyed that finally he could start back in work again. Winston’s current treatment includes pain relieving drugs in combination with controlled exercise and regular physiotherapy sessions.
