Developments in Internal Medicine at Northwest Surgeons

December 2010

Internal medicine is a complex speciality in dogs and cats that includes diseases of the gut (gastroenterology), disorders causing breathing difficulty, heart disease, hormonal problems, blood disorders, infectious diseases, kidney diseases, liver diseases, cancer care (oncology), allergic disease, disorders of the immune system and arthritis and musculoskeletal disorders (rheumatology).

In the last two years Northwest Surgeons has been assembling one of the strongest dog and cat internal medicine teams in the UK.  The existing team includes Dr. Rebecca Littler (a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Diplomate and Recognised Specialist in Internal Medicine with a Doctorate in gastroenterology), Simon Swift (A European Diplomate and European Recognised Specialist in Cardiology) and Dr. Chris May (with a Doctorate for research in immunology and rheumatology of dogs).  From February 2011 the Team will be joined by Lauren Lacorcia.  Lauren initially joined us to cover for Rebecca on maternity leave, but we are delighted to announce that she is staying on.   She is an American Diplomate in Internal Medicine and an American Recognised Specialist in Internal Medicine.  She has a special interest in kidney disease, liver disease, breathing difficulties in cats and disorders of the immune system.  Lauren’s particular skill set and areas of interest perfectly compliment the skills already available at Northwest Surgeons and takes us one step closer to our goal of having an internal medicine service for small animals that is second to none in the UK.
